Maybe jogging the thirty blocks to Powell alone at four in the morning in full-on rain wasn’t the smartest thing to do, but hey—I’d just lost my virginity, played a three-hour long game of Sorry! and found out that my mom used to fuck my high school bully’s dad. All in one night.

I had to cut myself some slack.

By the time I arrived at Powell’s front gates, I’d gotten a couple massive pit-stains and could drink ten gallons of anything, but I’d done it. I’d made it. And I wasn’t going to quit now.

“Elliot, here I come,” I breathed, dragging myself through the front doors of his dorm building like a wet cat, flashing the back of my Freeman ID. The kid behind the desk didn’t even notice the move, or didn’t care. “You fucking douchebag.”

Breezing in past the front desk to the elevator, and up to Elliot’s floor was all a blur, and as I stepped out into the hall, the sound of my own heart beating against my chest blotted out everything else.

My head was blank. My heart was not.

It was raging.

I strode up to Elliot’s door, panting, and rapped my knuckles on the wood. Stepping back, I shoved my hands in my pockets, and waited a few moments before yanking out my phone. Still no response. Radio silence.

Forcing in a deep breath, I knocked again. Hard.

A second later, I heard something crash and fall within the room, then a curse. Slippers shuffling across the carpet.

The door opened.

“What the fuck—” Felix stood there, staring back at me. “Oh.”

“Where’s Elliot?”

Felix reached up to rub his eyes, muttering another curse under his breath just as Leo came shuffling over to the door to peer over his shoulder. Recognizing me, he smiled. I didn’t.

“Look,” Felix said, and sucked in a long breath. “He’s not here.”

I raised an eyebrow. Didn’t believe a word he just said.

“Oh, yeah?” I said, already trying to pry my way past him. “Let me see.”

“Whoa, what’s going on?” Leo said, jumping back as I pushed past the two of them. “Why’s she here?”

“She kinda has a right to be here,” I heard Felix murmur just as I finished scanning the bunk beds to find that he was right. No Elliot.

I turned back to face him.

“What do you mean?” I said, lowering my voice to match his. Through the shadows, Felix’s dark eyes still pierced mine. “And where’s Elliot?”

Felix turned to Leo and shared a look. Their eyes seemed to have a whole conversation in that span of two seconds, a technique perfected from years of hanging out, no doubt, before he turned back to me.

“Come with me,” Felix said, moving back into the room to grab his phone. With a shrug, Leo headed back to his bed, flopping down onto the mattress.

Felix went back into the hall, and I followed him, his words churning in my head as he shut the door quietly behind us.

I had a right to be here.

Did he know about me and Elliot?
